• It's time to have the death penalty conversation in Colorado. We will have four death penalty experts as panelists, covering all sides of the issue, including Bob Autobee, father of slain corrections officer Eric Autobee, who has asked prosecutors not to seek the death penalty for his son's killer and Rep. Rhonda Fields, whose son's killer was sentenced to death and thinks Colorado voters should decide whether to keep capital punishment. Colorado Independent editor Susan Greene will moderate and will encourage audience participation. This is the latest Colorado Independent event designed for donors and readers. But it is free and open to all.

Out and about near 16th and York

Geese expand their territory south of City Park in front of my house. I rarely see them this far from City Park. Note our properly shoveled sidewalks.

With the announcement that the Central Recreation Center (16th and Josephine) will begin design phase, I guess the Wooley Dog Park (world's most expensive at $7 million) will eventually be closed.

The City of Denver never takes its sidewalk shoveling seriously. It will undoubtedly take a law suit to make the City pay attention to it duties, if ever.

Former 7-11 at Colfax and Josephine is getting a facelift.

Across the alley from the Old 7-11, also on Colfax, the Arby's is now gone (did you know that Arby's stood for RB = roast beef?). I remember when it was built, but, as usual, I don't remember what was there before. This corner, Colfax and York, must be very valuable. It is now for lease but I wouldn't be surprised if the building were torn down and replaced with something much bigger, as it includes the parking lot to the south. Maybe a mixed-use 7-story with retail and apartments. Did you know that condo construction in Denver has virtually stopped, due to excessive litigation?

Save Amtrak in Southern Colorado and add a stop in Pueblo

Today is the first step in the process of saving Amtrak in Southern Colorado and adding a stop in Pueblo!

This Chicago to Los Angeles route has served passengers through southeastern Colorado since the 1880s, including a stop in Pueblo until 1971. Amtrak is considering alternative routes due to maintenance issues that would divert the Southwest Chief rail line and discontinue passenger rail service to Colorado, Kansas and New Mexico. The Colorado portion of the line serves over 13,000 passengers per year at scheduled stops in Lamar, La Junta, and Trinidad.

However, we have a solution proposed to partner 5 ways to save it; while adding a stop to Pueblo! Adding Pueblo will add ridership and new travelers to the train.

An economic impact study shows that adding a stop in Pueblo would generate $67 million over 10 years. And if the replacement rail is produced in Pueblo another $33 million dollars could pass through our State.

But, we need your help.

Thanks to Rep. Leroy Garcia (D-Pueblo) and Sen. Larry Crowder (R-Alamosa) House Bill 1161 starts its journey through the General Assembly today to save this Amtrak route and add a stop in Pueblo.

DENVER CITY COUNCIL IN FANTASY LAND - NO POT SMOKING AT 420 CELEBRATION OF POT SMOKING

For your continuing entertainment, here's this afternoon's Denver City Council Special Issues - A64 meeting in which they discuss the upcoming 420 Celebration to be held April 20 in Civic Center Park. Rather than create a permit to smoke pot in a park on this special occasion, as is done endlessly with alcohol, they are going to insist on a NO POT SMOKING policy and have "many more police officers there than in the past years".

Here, when it finishes rendering at YouTube (should be at about 11:17pm tonight, which, BTW, is a new experiment for me - publishing here before YouTube has finished the video), is a 30-min video (excerpted from Ch8) of the fantasy world they live in, along with my rough notes in lieu of transcript. We continue to get reports of incidents involving suspects pretending to be collecting unpaid bills for Xcel Energy Colorado. Suspects contact the victim and tell them that their utility services will be shut off due to an overdue bill unless payment is made immediately. The victim is then pressured by the suspects to purchase a pre-paid debit card, and provide the suspect with the number on the back of the card. If the victim follows instructions, the money is removed from the card very quickly by the suspects. In most cases, victims are contacted by phone, however on some occasions the suspects have shown up in person. If you are contacted by a person wanting to collect for Xcel Energy, you should confirm their legitimacy by calling Xcel Energy at 800-481-4700 for businesses, or 800-895-4999 for residential service.
