Done Deal
The sign proclaims that the Old Safeway property, as we in the neighborhood still refer to it, is now the Central Denver Recreation Center site. But the current use seems to be a homeless bedroom.
Reading the Denver Property Assessment Records is a bit of a challenge. To see for yourself go here. The address is 1530 Josephine.
From what I can make out, the property sold for $400,000 in August of 2005, for about $1,000,000 sometime later (records not available), and was assessed at $3,350,000 when the City paid $6,000,000 for it on March 9, 2010. The tax payment is listed as $971,500, although I don't believe the City will be paying tax to itself.
So we paid almost twice the current assessed value, and took $971,500 off of the tax roll for the next ___ years. You fill in the blank as to how long you think this will take.
I can't help but wonder who Beverly A. Clark is. Her name has been associated with the property since 1987.
