Green Apple Festival - Earth Day - City Park Denver

Denver's City Park finally got its music festival, and a good time was had by all. Staff estimated the crowd at 3500 to 4000, and aside from a few faintings, considerable drinking, a wiff or two of 420 celebrating, and some sunburn, there was nothing negative to report. Nearby streets were posted with "Local Access Only - No Event Parking" and many rode bicycles. I even returned this morning to check on the clean-up, and everything looked good. It was, however, clear that a crowd of 50,000 (AEG's proposaed Mile High Music Festival) would have been way over the park's capacity. (Anyone recognize the group playing? I wanted to give them credit but forgot to ask their name. Please comment if you know.)

In spite of the signs and the small A-frame barricades, there were cars parked on the side streets. I would estimate there were about twice as many as a normal Sunday and people were walking through the neighborhoods carrying coolers and picnic gear. The irony of it is that most of the vehicles parked on the side streets were SUVs! Go GREEN!

  2. It's the Green Apple Festival, not plural...and I thought it was a wonderful time! It was nice to see everyone with their kids and dogs. The eco-groovy vending/informational booths were kinda lame, but that's to be expected (I guess) since this was Denver's first year. I am a neighborhood resident and I thought it was great to see people converging on city park...so what if they parked on my street!? Community rocks! Judgmental attitudes have no place in a green movement.

The publicity manager for the Green Apple Festival says "official" attendance is estimated at 12,000 for the afternoon. Carrie Lombardi of Madison House Publicity says 6,000 to 8,000 people were in the park at any one time. According to Lombardi, there were no reportable incidents and no arrests. She says event promoters, attendees, and neighborhood residents were satisfied with event. She says organizers are looking forward to next year.
